Reusable water bottles made primarily of stainless steel can be recycled without a problem. In fact, stainless steel is probably one of the most recyclable materials on the planet; it is theoretically 100% recyclable.
In addition, stainless steel's long-lasting properties make it a very eco-friendly material. So, going back to answer the main question, can you recycle stainless steel water bottles? The short answer is yes, but what about the lid and other components included? The lid of the REBO smart bottle serves as housing for the electronics and is made out of food-grade BPA-free polypropylene. It can be dismantled if needed to facilitate the recycling process.
The REBO Flexible strap is made from silicone, an abundant natural resource; the strap is 100% recyclable and is made with 10% recycled materials. The electronic components are RoHS and REACH certified which means they a free from hazardous chemicals.

Cradle-to-Cradle vs Cradle-to-Grave
Like REBO, products based on the Cradle-to-Cradle design philosophy privilege the use of durable materials and manufacturing processes that prolong their lives, so they stay in the supply chain for multiple cycles, if not forever.
On the contrary, status quo products designed with Cradle-to-Grave principles are short lived, ending up thrown away and piled up in landfills. This is how most products are made.
And it is also why we designed REBO, because this, too, needs to change.
Stainless Steel
REBO uses 18/10 stainless steel because it is non-degradable, will not corrode and is 100% recyclable. It’s made up of chromium, nickel and iron-- metals that are constantly in high demand, driving supply.
It means that the recycling rates for 18/10 stainless steel are also high. And that stainless steel products made today will be recycled tomorrow.
Silicon
REBO features a flexible strap made of silicone, not plastic. Silicone comes from silica, which is found in sand - an abundant, natural resource! While silicone manufacturing relies on non-renewable resources, their use is less intensive than that of plastic production.
Unlike plastic, silicone is heat and bacteria resistant, has low reactivity to chemicals and doesn’t break down as easily. That’s not to say that silicone is biodegradable, because it isn’t.
But, whereas plastics break down into microplastics that seep into every crevice of our environment, silicon stays together in larger pieces. It’s less likely to wreak havoc on marine life.
Durable Plastic
The REBO smart cap is made of durable plastic, 100% recyclable. And, like everything at REBO, it is designed using Cradle-to-Cradle principles, so we made it easy to disassemble and recycle. Businesses increasingly understand the need to design products with recycled plastic content.

All electrical components in the REBO hydration tracker are third-party certified by RoHS and REACH.
RoHS and REACH are programs aimed at preserving the environment, improving recycling possibilities and protecting the health of workers exposed to chemicals during the manufacturing process. Both certifications require strict guideline adherence to keep harmful substances out of products, and out of your hands.
Generally speaking, they restrict chemicals substances known to be:
Heavy metals
Known to lower energy levels and cause damage to: brain, lungs, kidney, liver, blood composition and other important organs.
Carcinogenic
Known to cause cancer
Mutagenic
Known to cause genes to mutate
Reproductive toxins
Known to cause birth defects and infertility

RoHS is a directive of the European Commission (EC) and stands for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances. It focuses specifically on electrical components.
RoHS-certified electrical components comply with strict guidelines to keep harmful substances out of products. They must refrain from ten chemical substance categories: Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavlent chromium (Cr6+), Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP).
REACH is a European Union (EU) regulation that stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals.
- Registration - chemical producers must register all safety data on the chemicals they produce
- Evaluation - European Agency experts evaluate safety data for high volume chemicals
- Authorization - Chemicals identified as of “very high concern” will be phased out and reformulated with safer alternatives
- Restriction of Chemicals- Some chemicals may be completely banned of uses restricted above certain threshold levels
The sole purpose of REACH is to address the production and use of chemical substances. Unlike RoHS, REACH spans across industry and doesn’t only focus on electronics.
REBO chose RoHS and REACH certifications because their programs complement each other. Obtaining only one certification doesn’t ensure compliance with the other. REBO products have been assessed for both electronic-specific compliance under RoHS and broader chemical compliance under REACH.
